Weekend Planner: Clubs
“It’s become less common to include more than one genre or energetic state on a single album,” says Amherst singer-songwriter-guitarist-record producer Doug Hewitt. “To bookend rock and folk styles between jazz instrumentals can render an album virtually unclassifiable.” Reveling in the unclassifiable, Hewitt has turned out six albums whose “unusual melding of inspirations — from folk to jazz to rock — makes his music unique” (Dirty Linen). Heading up the Doug Hewitt Group, a variable ensemble that generally includes Mitch Pine on piano, John Crankshaw on drums, David Beauvais on sax and Keith Fontaine on bass, Hewitt will be at the Shutesbury Athletic Club Friday night where he’ll offer a preview of his forthcoming seventh album, along with excursions into classical jazz and maybe covers ranging from Coltrane to the Beatles.
8 p.m. The Shutesbury Athletic Club is at 282 Wendell Road in Shutesbury. No cover. shutesburyac.com
