Weekend Planner: Theater

In a notorious incident that brought hate-crime legislation to the fore at state and federal levels, 21-year-old gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was abducted, tortured, tied to a fence and left to die on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. One month after the October 1998 murder, members of New York’s Techtonic Theater Company traveled to Laramie to interview townspeople who had been torn apart by the crime. Forged from the interviews and evolving collaboratively over a long workshop process, the resulting play, known as “The Laramie Project,” has since been performed worldwide and continues to generate controversy.

Tonight and Friday the Amherst-based Starlight’s Youth Theater — “an ensemble of veteran teen actors committed to the development and growth of their craft as well as to the presentation of socially relevant works” — will perform the piece at the Northampton Center for the Arts. 7 p.m. All tickets $5. nohoarts.org
