Weekend Planner: Music

Written for the girls the composer taught at an orphanage in Venice, Vivaldi’s 11-movement “Magnificat” contains beautiful solos, duets and trios, along with stirring choral movements. Energetic, bright and colorful, Handel’s “Dixit Dominus” is a setting of Psalm 110 for five-part chorus, soloists, strings and continuo. Both works will be performed Sunday in Mount Holyoke College’s Abbey Chapel by the Hampshire Choral Society and Orchestra, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary. The 150-voice choral society will be joined by the Hampshire Young People’s Chorus, soloists sopranos Junko Watanabe and Monica Hatch, alto Scott Reeves, tenor Marc Winer and baritone Peter W. Shea. Allan Taylor conducts.

3 p.m. $15 general; $10 students and seniors; $5 children under 10. Tickets at the door or at A.J. Hastings, Amherst; Cooper’s Corner, Florence; State Street Fruit Store and Broadside Books in Northampton; and the Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley. www.hampshirechoral.org
