Think Europe is in difficult straits today? British writer Keith Lowe’s “Savage Continent,” published by St. Martin’s Press, depicts post-World War II Europe adrift in chaos, violence and political upheaval: the Greek Civil War, Polish-Ukranian bloodshed, widespread rape of German women by occupying Soviet troops. Lowe’s thesis is that the war essentially continued for several years after the fighting stopped.

A Shot of Theater is a new, community-based group that aims to provide a live stage experience in a cost-effective way. They’ll stage a series of short, one-act plays at The Elevens in Northampton on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Nov. 15 and 29. Stand-up comedians and other special guests are part of the cabaret-style performance — and drinks will be served.
