Weekend Planner: Amherst Orchid Society’s annual show

Orchids first emerged around the time of the dinosaurs and the number of their species is now estimated to be four times greater than the number of mammal species. Considering that and the fact that about 800 new species are created each year, it all adds up to a nightmare for taxonomists.

Aside from providing a gorgeous display of these exotic plants from professional growers, the Amherst Orchid Society’s annual show offers the opportunity to learn about orchids and the reason they are bred by an increasing number of enthusiasts.

The show runs Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Smith Vocational School on Route 9 in Northampton. $5 admission; children under 12 free. 267-5124 (Jerrey Roberts photo)
