Weekend colleges: UMass women’s lacrosse holds off Richmond for 49th straight Atlantic 10 victory

The UMass women’s lacrosse team answered every Richmond run as it won its 49th straight Atlantic 10 game, 19-13, Sunday at Garber Field.

Richmond (8-4, 3-1) led 2-0 and 3-2, but UMass (9-3, 4-0) scored five straight for a 7-3 edge.

The Spiders closed within 7-6, but the Minutewomen took a 10-6 lead at halftime.

UMass extended the lead to 14-8, but Richmond inched to within 14-11.

Callie Santos then scored the first three goals in a 4-0 run as UMass pulled away.

Santos finished with six goals, while Stephanie Croke had four.

Endicott 18, WNEU 4 — Emma Norden (Belchertown) scored and had three ground balls for the Golden Bears (4-8, 1-3 CCC) Saturday.

Simmons 15, St. Joseph 1 — Kate Bowers (Belchertown) had two goals, three ground balls, two forced turnovers and one draw control as the Sharks (4-6, 2-1 GNAC) won at home.

Colby 8, Amherst 3 — The Mammoths (4-6, 1-5 NESCAC) led 2-0, but Colby scored eight straight for the road win Saturday. Claire Cagnassola scored twice in defeat.

Springfield 16, Mount Holyoke 5 — Charlotte Wagner and Kaitlin Braz each scored twice, but the Lyons (2-9, 0-4 NEWMAC) fell at home Saturday.

Wellesley 20, Smith 13 — Chloe Harris had six goals, while Sydney Garner added three, but the Pioneers (8-4, 0-3 NEWMAC) fell at home Saturday.

Men’s lacrosse

Towson 11, UMass 8 — The Minutemen (4-6, 1-1 CAA) fell behind 6-0 and never recovered as they fell on the road on Saturday.

Dan Muller had three goals, while Buddy Carr and Gianni Bianchin each had two.

Amherst 9, Colby 5 — Max Keeley had three goals, while Chris Albanese added two as the Mammoths (8-3, 4-2 NESCAC) won on the road Saturday.

Baseball

VCU 2, UMass 0; VCU 11, UMass 1 — Ryan Lever and Brett Evangelista had the only hits for the Minutemen in the shutout on Saturday. Evangelista and Nolan Kessinger each had two hits in Sunday’s loss for UMass (6-17, 2-4 Atlantic 10).

Amherst 3, Middlebury 1; Middlebury 6, Amherst 2 — Max Steinhorn (run) was 2-for-3 and Jackson Volle fanned eight in the win for the Mammoths (6-7, 1-1 NESCAC) Saturday. Ryan Hardin had two hits in the loss.

Wheaton 18, Amherst 8 — Harry Roberson and Ariel Kenney each had three hits, but the Mammoths (6-8) fell at home Sunday.

New England 4, Thomas 3; Thomas 7, New England 6; New England 6, Thomas 1; New England 14, Thomas 3 — Evan Delaney (Hadley) was 3-for-10 (triple) with five runs, two RBIs, six walks and two stolen bases, while Jamie Carey (Amherst) was 6-for-12 (double) with three runs, three RBIs and two stolen bases as the Pilgrims (10-10, 3-3 NAC) went 3-1 in Kingston, Rhode Island this weekend.

Tufts 4, Lesley 1 — Rory Ziomek (Amherst) struck out three in the seventh to earn his second save Saturday for the host Jumbos (14-2).

Softball

UMass 3, Saint Louis 1; UMass 4, Saint Louis 2; Saint Louis 1, UMass 0 — Kaitlyn Stavinoha went 3-for-4 and Meg Colleran struck out seven in Game 1, while Tara Klee was 2-for-3 (RBI, run) with Colleran earning the two-inning save in Game 2 Saturday.

Colleran scattered three hits, but UMass (15-17, 4-2 Atlantic 10) collected only four in Sunday’s shutout.

Amherst 11, Middlebury 1; Amherst 3, Middlebury 0; Amherst 7, Middlebury 0 — Lauren Tuiskula was 5-for-12 with three RBIs and four runs, while Ally Kido was 5-for-13 with two RBIs and a run for the Mammoths (16-6, 5-0 NESCAC) in weekend sweep. Alena Marovitz had five RBIs.

Wellesley 7, Smith 3; Wellesley 10, Smith 2 — Emma Kraus was 4-for-5 with a run, but the Pioneers were swept on the road Saturday.

Springfield 5, Smith 1, Springfield 10, Smith 8 — Ally Snyder was 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBIs but the Pioneers (6-12, 3-5 NEWMAC) were swept at home Sunday.

Nichols 7, University of New England 0; Nichols 6, New England 1 — Alexis Ferris (Hampshire Regional) struck out 15, walked three and allowed eight hits as she improved to 6-3 with the doubleheader sweep for the Bison (9-7, 3-5 CCC), Sunday in Dudley.

Women’s tennis

Mount Holyoke 5, Bryn Mawr 0; Wellesley 3, Mount Holyoke 2; Mount Holyoke 5, Smith 0; Vassar 4, Mount Holyoke 1; Vassar 5, Smith 0; Wellesley 4, Smith 1; Smith 3, Bryn Mawr 2 — Catherine Peabody went 3-1 in her matches as the Lyons (12-8) split in the Seven Sisters Championships this weekend.

Margaret Anne Smith won two matches for the Pioneers.

Vassar went 4-0 to win the title.

Bowdoin 5, Amherst 4; Amherst 8, Bates 0 — The Mammoths (5-4, 3-0 NESCAC) swept doubles and took third and fourth singles en route to the win over Bowdoin at home Saturday.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin 5, Amherst 4 — The Mammoths (12-3, 1-1 NESCAC) couldn’t hold on to a 2-1 doubles edge as they fell at home Saturday.

Men’s track

Amherst Spring Fling — The Mammoths placed second behind WPI with 79 points Saturday.

Kristian Sogaard won the 800 (1:55.94), Kevin Connors the 1,500 (4:06.59) and Jordan Edwards the triple jump (42-11½) for Amherst.

Women’s track

Amherst Spring Fling — The Mammoths placed fourth while WPI won the meet Saturday.

Katherine Treanor won the 5,000 (17:35.91) and Abbey Asare-Bediako took the triple jump (38-7¾) for Amherst.

Smith College Invitational — Placing first for Smith on Saturday were: Casey Hecox (800, 2:28.59), Aviana Kleine (400 hurdles, 1:10.62), Katie Quarles Stephens (3,000 steeplechase, 12:04.94), Cassandra Naranjo (high jump, 5-0¼), Zoe Rubinstein (pole vault, 11-7¾), Sara Clark (triple jump, 33-7½) and Katy McClellan (javelin, 121-8).

Amherst native Frances Duncan was second in the 1,500 (5:12.15) for Smith.

Shante Henderson won the 100 hurdles (16.3) for Mount Holyoke.

Equestrian

Zone 1 Championship — Mount Holyoke took top honors with 41 points Saturday and advanced to the IHSA National Championships (May 4-7) in Kentucky.

Bridget Finnerty (individual open fences, individual open flat), Daisy Sears (individual novice fences) and Mollie Kowalchik (individual intermediate flat) qualified for nationals in their respective class.

Finnerty will compete in the Cacchione Cup at nationals as the high-point rider from zones.

Women’s rowing

Knecht Cup — UMass placed fourth (6:49.90) in the Varsity 8 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, New Jersey Sunday.

Lake Quinsigamond — Competing against Clark, Vermont, Simmons and Endicott, Mount Holyoke’s Varsity 8 placed second in 7:09 Sunday.

Jennifer McLaughlin Cup — Smith’s Varsity 8 placed fifth (7:11.63) against Colby, Hamilton, Wesleyan and WPI on Lake Quinsigamond Saturday.

Men’s golf

Hampton Inn Invitational — Nicholas Kumamoto tied for 12th (80-79–159) as Amherst tied for fourth Saturday at Allendale Country Club in North Dartmouth.

Chris Soderberg (Northampton) tied for 40th (85-82–167) for 11th-place Elms.

Women’s golf

Vassar Invitational — Morgan Yurosek tied for second (76-78–154) as Amherst placed third Saturday.

Mouth Holyoke (sixth) was led by Allison Shilling (79-81–160) in 10th (tied).
