UMass hockey breaks Merrimack jinx; Women’s basketball drops opener

The momentum from last week’s come-from-behind tie against UConn carried into Friday’s game at Merrimack for the UMass hockey team.

The Minutemen scored three times in the first period and held on from there to beat Merrimack, 3-1, Friday in North Andover.

William Lagesson scored 4 minutes, 1 second into the game to start things for the Minutemen (3-4-1, 1-2-1 Hockey East).

Shane Bear and Jonny Lazarus also added goals for UMass, while Nic Renyard made 40 saves.

It was UMass’ first win at Lawlor Arena since 2008.

The Minutemen host Vermont, Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.

Women’s basketball

Buffalo 61, UMass 47 — The Minutewomen fell behind by 15 in the first quarter and could never completely climb out of the hole and fell on the road.

Freshman Hailey Leidel led UMass (0-1) with 16 points, while fellow rookie Ryan Holder added 13 points.

Men’s cross country

NCAA Regional Championships — Blake Croteau was 118th in 32:49 on the 10-kilometer course as UMass placed 28th with 692 points at Van Cordtland Park in the Bronx, New York.

Women’s cross country

NCAA Regional Championships — Heather MacLean finished 39th in 21:27 on the 6-kilometer course as UMass placed 20th with 591 points at Van Cordtland Park in the Bronx, New York.

Freshman Taylor Blow (Easthampton) was 160th in 22:58.
