Weekend colleges: Amherst men’s soccer advances to third round of NCAA Division III Tournament

The Amherst College men’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Sunday.

The 16th-ranked Mammoths beat No. 25 Springfield, 2-0, during penalty kicks at Hitchcock Field in Amherst.

Amherst will play Rochester (13-3-3) in the third round.

Lee Owen played goal during the penality kick round for Amherst. The senior stopped Tim Wood for his only save. The Pride missed of three of their four attempts.

Weller Hlinomaz and Felix Wu netted their PKs for the Mammoths (12-3-3).

Luke Nguyen scored in the first half to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. Springfield tied the game in the second half.

Michael Stone finished four saves during regulation and overtime for the Mammoths.

Amherst beat Salem State, 2-1, in the first round on Saturday.

Fikayo Ajayi scored both goals, while Stone made four saves.

Ice Hockey

Providence 7, UMass 2 — Tied 1-1, the No. 8 Friars scored five straight to take command and cruise to the Hockey East win, Saturday at home.

John Leonard scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from Philip Lagunov to tie the game at 1-1.

However, four straight power-play goals gave PC a 5-1 lead.

Marco Bozzo scored from Austin Plevy and Kut Kleats to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Matt Murray finished with 39 saves for UMass (5-6-0, 2-3-0 Hockey East).

Men’s cross country

Division III New Englands — Amherst placed second with 91 points behind MIT (81), Saturday at Southern Maine in Gorham.

Clark Ricciardelli was fifth overall on the 8-kilometer course in 25:34 for the Mammoths.

Amherst native Ryan Stender (25:37) was sixth for Brandeis.

Northampton native Aidan Gilson was 12th in 25:45 for MIT.

Women’s cross country

Division III New Englands — Amherst placed sixth with 183 points, Saturday at Southern Maine in Gorham. MIT (58) was first.

Smith finished 16th, while Mount Holyoke was 39th.

Nicky Roberts was second overall (20:31) on the 6-kilometer course for the Mammoths. Kaitlyn Mooney (20:22) was first for Coast Guard.

Karena Garcia (23:10) was 86th for Smith. Corris Moss (23:52) was 144th was Mount Holyoke.
