Weekend colleges: Harvard sophomore Gabby Thomas (Florence) to run 100, 200 dashes at NCAA track championships

Gabby Thomas will be a busy sprinter at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships.

The Florence native and Harvard sophomore qualified for the 200-meter dash on Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary meet in Lexington, Kentucky. Thomas had the fastest time after the quarterfinal heats in 22.56 seconds to advance to Eugene, Oregon.

The Williston Northampton graduate’s time was the 11th fastest in the U.S. as of May 19, according to USA Track & Field.

Thomas will be competing in the 100 and 200 at the NCAA championships, June 7-10 at Hayward Field. She was third in the 200 last year to earn All-American status.

At the NCAA Division III Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, Amherst freshman Katherine Treanor finished 10th in the 10,000-meter run in 35:55.53 Thursday.

Amherst junior Abbey Asare-Bediako was 20th in the triple jump (37-¼) Saturday.

Men’s track & field

Amherst sophomore Kristian Sogaard placed eighth in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Sogaard ran 1:52.15 Saturday to earn All-American status.

Softball

Williams 4, Amherst 1 — The Mammoths’ NCAA Division III Tournament run came to an end Saturday at the hands of their NESCAC rivals.

Amherst (34-12) closed its first-ever trip to the championship field with the loss at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Sammy Salustri finished with two hits, while Lauren Tuiskula, Kyra Naftel, Alena Marovitz and Annie Murphy each had one.

Gina Pagan struck out two, walked four and allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings in defeat.

Amherst will return all but four players next season.

Women’s rowing

UMass’ Varsity 8 placed 20th as the Minutewomen concluded its season, Sunday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.

Haley Eovine (cox), Krysten Menks, Zoe Hill, Grace Bundy, Daniella du Toit, Abigail Diazcadena, Pippa Edwards, Natalie Boisvert and Sam Wonderlin took second place in the D final in 6 minutes, 49.054 seconds.

UMass competed against Gonzaga, Navy and Jacksonville.

UMass finished 21st overall as a team.

Ultimate

Angela Zhu (Amherst) and Dartmouth’s Princess Layout will play Texas in the USA Ultimate Division 1 College Tournament championship at 2:30 p.m. Monday, in Mason, Ohio.

Dartmouth went 3-1 in pool play, then beat Michigan (15-7), Stanford (14-8) and British Columbia (14-8) to reach the finals.

Zhu has eight goals and 28 assists in the tournament. She is second in the tournament in assists.

In the men’s tournament, UMass fell to Carleton College, 15-14, in the semifinal round.

Zoodisc beat Pittsburgh, 13-11, in the quarterfinals after going 4-0 in pool play.

Ben Sadok finished with 14 goals and 30 assists in the tournament.
