Wednesday’s HS soccer: Jessica Van Heynigen ties Gateway scoring record

Jessica Van Heynigen tied the Gateway Regional girls soccer scoring record, scoring two goals and adding an assist as the Gators beat Athol, 5-1, Wednesday in Huntington.

The senior has 104 points in her career.

The first goal of the game came from Nina Iglesias on an assist from Ava Auclair.

Erin Harris scored Gateway’s second on an assist by Becca Hyjek before halftime.

In the second half, Iglesias doubled her tally after receiving a pass from Van Heynigen.

Van Heynigen scored the last two goals for Gateway (6-1-3) on assists from Auclair and Charlotte Kazalski.

Becca Herman made one save for Gateway.

Smith Vocational 3, Franklin Tech 1 — Megan Cone scored two goals with an assist in a road win for the Vikings.

Ella Sherman also scored, with Marissa Mayhew adding an assist.

Sydney Cyr made seven saves for Smith Voke (6-4).

Northampton 2, Ludlow 1 — The Blue Devils (7-3-3) came back from a 1-0 deficit in the second half to defeat the Lions at home.

The match was scoreless until the Lions scored three minutes after halftime.

Northampton equalized when Alexandra Bertuch-Wallace scored an unassisted goal.

Brigitte Goeler-Slough scored the winner on an assist from Caroline Tanner.

Sydney White made four saves for the Blue Devils.

Belchertown 1, Longmeadow 0 — Emma LeBlanc had the game-winner for the Orioles on an assist from Michayla Hosmer early in the second half.

Samantha Birks picked up her first shutout of the season in the road win, making eight saves for Belchertown (6-4-2).

Frontier Regional 5, Pope Francis 2 — Cambrie Hamilton had a hat trick with an assist in a road win for the Red Hawks.

Maddie Crocker and Lexa Boyden also scored for Frontier (8-1-1, 5-1-1 Pioneer North).

Jenna Martin and Angela Self added assists.

Smith Academy 6, McCann Tech 0 — Olivia Niedbala had three goals and Hannah Rickert three assists in a home win for the Falcons (4-7-1).

Madeline Niedbala and Maisy Dyer also scored for Smith Academy.

Gabby Tisdale made two saves.

Amherst Regional 2, Sabis 1 — Elena Arias and Grace Farnham scored for the Hurricanes (5-6-2) in a home win.

Freshman Mildred Orrellana assisted on both goals for Amherst.

Reilly Lepak made three saves.

Boys soccer

South Hadley 6, Greenfield 0 — Liam Jordan scored twice with an assist, while Declan Joy added his first career tally along with an assist as the Tigers (5-5-2) rolled at home.

Ashton Sanford, Ryan Gage and Michael Zhou each scored a goal. Zhou’s tally was the first of his career.

David Adams had two assists and Jon Samlall one for South Hadley. Clayton Koppi (two saves) and Xavier Butzer (one) split halves in goal for the shutout.

The Tigers needed six points with six games left to qualify.

Ludlow 6, Northampton 0 — The Blue Devils trailed 5-0 at the half, but played well the rest of the way.

Evan Renauld made 14 saves, while defenders Evan Moulton and Paul Eriksen each had a goal-line clear for Hamp (1-10-0).
