Thursday’s high schools: Amherst, Northampton, PVPA set for state ultimate championships

The Amherst Regional boys ultimate team will begin this weekend’s state championships in the same place it ended last year: on top.

The Hurricanes are the No. 1 team in Pool A, indicative of a top seed.

The state championships will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Oxbow Marina athletic fields in Northampton. Pool play starts Saturday at 9 a.m., and bracket play, which determines placing, begins 11 a.m. Sunday.

On the boys side, there are three pools of three teams and one pool with four teams.

Amherst’s junior varsity is in Pool B, while Northampton and Pioneer Valley Performing Arts will play in Pool D.

Northampton, fresh off a title in the Pioneer Valley Invitational, leads the girls field as the first seed in Pool A. The girls field features three pools of five and one of four.

PVPA will also play in Pool A, while Amherst’s varsity is in Pool C and JV in Pool B.

Central/West Division 2 Pentathlon — South Hadley’s Lindsay Marjanski took third, and Sophie Gatzounas was fourth at Westfield State.

Marjanski finished with 2,190 points.

Outside of the 100 hurdles, Marjanski was in the top three of every event. She placed second in the high jump at 1.41 meters and in the 800 at 2 minutes, 23.89 seconds.

Gatzounas totaled 2,102 points. She won the shot put at 8.87 meters and was third in the high jump at 1.36 meters.

Softball

Athol 7, Frontier Regional 6 — Sarah Meunier had three hits and two RBIs, but it wasn’t enough to get the Red Hawks into the postseason.

Frontier (8-10, 5-9 Franklin) needed to beat the Red Raiders to finish .500 and qualify.

The Red Hawks rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth but gave up a run in the bottom of the inning.

Ariana Walker and Ava Harper each had two RBIs, while Lexa Boyden added two hits.

Frontier seniors Meunier and Hannah LaClaire played their final games for the Red Hawks.

Hampshire Regional 14, Ludlow 6 — Katy O’Connor and Brielle Bergeron each went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run homer for the Raiders.

Hampshire finished 8-0 in Suburban League play and have won nine games in a row.

Hampshire (15-4) closes out the regular season Saturday against Turners Falls.

Westfield 18, Belchertown 8 — Ny’Asia Alexander had three RBIs, while Hannah Sugrue belted five hits for the Orioles on Wednesday.

Lauren LeBlanc and Tiffany Mann added two RBIs each.

Seniors Lexi Lajuenese, LeBlanc, Sugrue, Cheyenne Rose and Alexander played their final game for the Orioles (3-17).

Boys lacrosse

Longmeadow 21, Amherst 2 — Aidan Bass had a goal and an assist in a season-ending loss Thursday.

Liam Kelly also found the net for the Hurricanes (4-13, 1-7 Valley Wheel).

It was the final game for Amherst seniors Bass, Kelly, Josh Gerber-Dolan, Daniel Lyra and Marcus Suom.

Girls lacrosse

Belchertown 17, Lee 13 — Elise Pikul scored 10 goals to lead the Orioles to their first win of the season.

Morgan Mathurin found the net six times, and Maelia Lip had a goal.

Kate Wrona dished out an assist, and Emily Sayball-Wimmer stopped eight shots for Belchertown (1-18).

It was the final game for Belchertown seniors Alanah Carattini, Alex Hoffman, Katherine Hislop, Anna Prejsner, Natalya Siniscalchi, Lip, Faith Lawless, Airani Patel and Hannah Roper.

South Hadley 18, Monson 4 — Briana Couture tallied four goals and an assist for the Tigers on Wednesday in a season-ending win.

Sara Lacey picked up three goals and an assist, while Taylor Roy, Julia Miele and Marley Medina all added two goals and two assists each.

Hope Earl chipped in two goals and an assist. Paiton Luis and Kami Sierra each had a goal and an assist.

Brooke Blair found the net, while Kera Murphy and Hannah Bisson each dished out two assists.

Hanna Kopec made nine saves for South Hadley (5-13).

Seniors Lacey, Roy, Couture, Medina, Sierra and Earl played their final game for the Tigers.

Boys golf

Kingswood Invitational — Westhampton’s Nick Randolph shot a 73 to earn Williston’s medalist honors, Wednesday at Oak Ridge Golf Club in Feeding Hills.

The Wildcats placed fourth of 24 teams with a score of 388. Exeter was first at 375.
