Thursday’s high schools: South Hadley girls basketball closes in on perfect regular season with win over Granby

Sophie Gatzounas scored 16 points for the South Hadley girls basketball team in a 50-27 win over Granby on Thursday on senior night.

Mia Kelly added 12 points for South Hadley (18-0, 7-0 Central), knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

Nora Young led Granby (8-9, 3-3 Central) with 12 points.

The Rams need two wins in their final three games to qualify for the postseason.

Mohawk 48, Smith Academy 42 — Vanessa Skawski had 11 points, but the Falcons lost on the road.

Hannah Rickert had four points and 11 rebounds for Smith Academy (6-12, 1-7 Franklin South).

Hampshire Regional 70, Palmer 36 — The Raiders raced out to a 30-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in their third straight win.

Katy O’Connor led three Hampshire (5-4, 4-2 Central) players in double figures with 21 points.

Katelyn Pickunka scored 18 points, and Caroline O’Connor added 13.

Smith Vocational 44, Westfield Tech 26 — Stephanie Start scored 18 points for the Vikings (8-11, 4-3 Tri-County South).

Boys basketball

Mahar 63, Hopkins Academy 54 — A good defensive plan to keep Sam’i Roe away from the basket proved effective for the Senators, and the Golden Hawks lost on the road.

Roe only connected on two field goals and had a season-low six points.

Jon Morrison had 21 points with 10 rebounds for Hopkins (16-2, 13-1 Hampshire), and John Earle added 14.

Hampden Charter 59, Gateway Regional 37 — Shane Mastello scored 16 points for the Gators in a home loss.

Brett Turban hit three 3s and scored 12 points for Gateway (5-12, 3-10 Tri-County).

West Springfield 70, Northampton 53 — The Blue Devils did not have an answer for Sharown Fowler (31 points) in a road loss to the Terriers.

Elijah Davis (14 points) and Diego Corrada-Mattei (11 points) were in double figures for Northampton (12-6, 4-4 Valley Wheel).
