Takes issue with columnist on hate groups

I often read Jay Fleitman’s monthly column to get a viewpoint that is diametrically opposed to my own. It is important to hear the logic of other points of view.

Unfortunately, I usually find his words to be short on attention to the facts. However, his column of Sept. 5 has reached a new low (“Freedom of speech under assault”).

He starts by claiming that antifa is “responsible for much of the mob violence that has occurred during this summer of political unease.” Are you kidding? Did you notice that protesters were run down by a white supremacist? That Neo-Nazis marched through Charlottesville, Virginia, brandishing automatic weapons?

That our own President could hardly keep himself from honoring the good people of the KKK? Is it free speech that is driving the dramatic increase in hate groups in the United States?

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, reports that they have increased 17 percent since 2014 with a jump since the election due to a presidential campaign and administration that has tolerated extremist ideas.
