Reuse and recycle as part of decluttering

Thank you for the April 28 article from The Sacramento Bee entitled “Bogged Down by Clutter? Here’s the Fix.”

There were many helpful suggestions for cleaning out and decluttering spaces. Unfortunately, while there were repeated suggestions to “throw away” or “toss out” items, there was only one mention of “donating” items, and not one mention of “recycling.”

To its credit, the Gazette covered the Sustainability Festival held in Amherst on April 22, published its annual Reduce Reuse Recycle supplement earlier in April, and offered several articles about the April 29 People’s Climate March.

In keeping with its focus on sustainability, the Gazette either could have skipped the decluttering article altogether, or, at a minimum, paired it with a reminder to make use of its reuse and recycling guide.

As offered, the article encouraged cleaning out and paring down using the least socially responsible and environmentally conscious method — throwing stuff away.
