Amherst missed chance for anagram mascot

I was disappointed to hear that the “hamster” is no longer under consideration for the Amherst College team name (“Who will replace Amherst College’s Lord Jeff?” March 20).

Not many college names are an anagram, much less an animal one, so a rare opportunity was missed.

But I have been disappointed before. As a graduate of Swarthmore College, when it was decided to replace “Little Quakers,” I suggested “earthworms” — it seemed an especially appropriate anagram in so many ways. Obviously, it was not used (“Phoenix” was chosen).
