Rhubarb Day

Saturday is Rhubarb Day in Hawley, declared by the Board of Selectmen in honor of the release of local writer Tinky Weisblat’s new book, “Love, Laughter and Rhubarb.”

Published by Weisblat’s Merry Lion Press, the book offers a slew of recipes by local cooks, but also explores rhubarb history, rhubarb in literature and how to pick and use it.

To celebrate, Weisblat is hosting what she calls a “Hawley Rhubarb Matinee” at her home, 84 Middle Road, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those who attend are asked to bring a rhubarb dish, recipe or rhubarb story. She also suggests people wear something rhubarb-red to the party.

At 3 p.m., a gardening expert will discuss raising rhubarb and then Weisblat will talk about what she calls a “much-maligned food.” For more information about the Hawley Rhubarb Matinee, email hawleyrhubarb@earthling.net.

Recipes in “Love, Laughter and Rhubarb,” which will be for sale at the party, range from medicinal teas and beverages, to condiments, desserts and entrees. They include barbecue sauce, chutney, Persian lamb with rhubarb stew and rhubarb chili. There is a strawberry-rhubarb cream cheese tart, and even rhubarb pizza.

Weisblat also will teach a class on cooking with rhubarb Thursday at 6:15 p.m. at the Baker’s Pin, 34 Bridge St., Northampton.
