Monday’s high school softball/baseball: Defending state champ Hampshire blanks Chicopee in opener

The Hampshire Regional softball team began its state title defense with a 10-0 win over Chicopee on Monday at home.

Pitchers Alana Mohan (4 innings, five strikeouts) and Emily Halket (three innings, two strikeouts) allowed a combined six hits and no runs.

Senior Danielle McGan was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, and classmate Paige Sullivan went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple.

Northampton 12, South Hadley 0 — Blue Devils junior Anna Kerwood struck out 13 through six innings, and allowed just two hits to a struggling South Hadley (0-1) lineup.

Senior shortstop Zoe Driscoll-Sbar swung a hot bat for Northampton (2-0), going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Granby 15, Putnam 3 — Abi Beauregard hit for the cycle and struck out nine in the Rams’ first win of the season.

She added two RBIs, and allowed two hits and two walks in the circle.

Mallory Beauregard went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Grace Sinclair added two hits for Granby (1-1).

Taconic 10, Frontier Regional 0 — Taconic’s Ashley Keegan blanked the Red Hawks (0-1) with 11 strikeouts and no walks through seven innings.

Frontier shortstop Sarah Meunier’s double in the bottom of the seventh broke up the no-hitter.

Ludlow 11, Belchertown 10 (8) — The Orioles (0-2) went ahead in extra innings, but watched the Lions walk off for the win.

Hannah Sugrue had two hits and three runs scored.

Emma LeBlanc went 2-for-4 and score three times. Lauren LeBlanc added two hits.

Smith Vocational 14, Commerce 13 — Samantha Von Haugg struck out 11 and went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, hitting a home run in the Vikings opener.

Allison Kowalczyk hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and was 2-for-4.

Avalon Darby added three hits in three trips and drove in four runs for the Vikings (1-0, 1-0 Tri-County).

Baseball

Pope Francis 4, Northampton 3 (12) — Zach Brittain pitched 6⅔ innings of scoreless relief and went 2-for-4 with a double, but the Blue Devils lost in extra innings.

A walk, a sacrifice, a Northampton (0-1) wild pitch and a throwing error to third allowed the winning run to score.

Joe Pion caught all 12 innings for the Blue Devils and hit a two-run single in the third inning.

“We played really good defense,” Northampton coach Mark Baldwin said. “We had like three diving catches in the outfield.”

Westfield Tech 3, Granby 2; Granby 4, Drury 2 — Joe Bessette had two hits, including a double and a RBI, but the Rams (1-1) fell on the road.

Dom Rosazza pitched six innings and struck out eight, giving up the three runs in the loss on the mound.

On Sunday, the Rams won at home. Noah Bleakley had 13 strikeouts in the win, and went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Bessette added two hits and two RBIs for the Rams.

Belchertown 14, Gateway 4 — Aidan Baceski had two hits and two RBIs in a season-opening win.

Chase Kupinsky and Ryan French also drove in runs for the Orioles (1-0).

Josh Webster and Jake McKittrick each had two hits for the Gators (0-1).
