Amherst Regional senior basketball player Meikkel Murray will get to celebrate after all.

Murray, who thought he surpassed 1,000 career points in a loss to West Springfield on Tuesday, is actually six points shy of the milestone.

Amherst coach Jim Matuszko recalculated Murray’s numbers after the game and Murray needed 28 points against the Terriers, not the 21 he originally thought.

Murray finished the 72-64 loss with 22 points, scoring his final basket with seconds left. Murray was told after the game that he reached the milestone.

Amherst hosts East Longmeadow at 7 p.m. Friday at the middle school. It’s also senior night.

Murray will look to become the first Amherst boy since Bayete Gordon in 1999 to score 1,000 points. Jeff Osborne and Matt Garvey are the only other players in the boys 1,000-point club.
