Supports ‘End of Life Options Act’

I commend the June 10 letter writer who urges support for the “End of Life Options Act,” a bill currently being considered in the Massachusetts Legislature.

The bill would make it legal for a physician to assist an interminably ill patient in deciding when to die.

House Bill 1194 was co-sponsored by Rep. Peter Kocot, D-Northampton. I have spoken with Rep. Solomon Goldstein-Rose, D-Amherst, urging him to support this bill. He may be reached at 617-722-2582.

I have also requested the support of Senate President Stanley Rosenberg,D-Amherst, regarding Senate Bill 1225. His staff can be reached in Northampton at 584-1649, or at the Statehouse at 617-722-1500.

Also known as the “Death with Dignity Act” or the “Compassionate Care for the Terminally Ill Act,” this is an important though controversial piece of legislation that has been introduced eight times over the years. The bill presently is being considered by the Joint Committee on Public Health.
