UMass’ Heather MacLean (800), Harvard’s Gabrielle Thomas (100) advance to NCAA Track championships

Heather MacLean and Gabrielle Thomas are headed to Eugene, Oregon.

MacLean, a UMass redshirt senior, and Thomas, a Harvard junior, advanced through the NCAA East Preliminary, Friday in Tampa, Florida.

Thomas, who grew up in Florence and attended Williston Northampton, qualified for the semifinals of the 100-meter dash with a second-place showing in 10.99 seconds. Aleia Hobbs, of LSU, had the top quarterfinal time in 10.9.

Thomas advanced to the quarterfinals of the 200 dash. She placed first in the second heat of the first round in 22.46 seconds. It was the fifth-best time out of six heats.

Thomas drew Lane 6 in heat two of the quarterfinals, which starts at 2:20 p.m., Saturday.

MacLean placed seventh overall in the 800 in 2:04.35 to advance to her first NCAA outdoor championship. MacLean was second in the second heat behind Abike Egbeniyi, of Middle Tennessee State, who ran 2:03.5.

The NCAA championships start June 7 in Eugene.
