Friday’s colleges: UMass hockey can’t close gap at BU

The UMass hockey team stayed close throughout against No. 3 Boston University, but couldn’t draw even and fell, 3-1, Friday at Agganis Arena.

Ray Pigozzi had the lone goal for UMass (5-21-2, 2-13-1 HEA), while Ryan Wischow made 42 saves.

Bowdoin 3, Amherst 1 — The Polar Bears scored the only two goals of the third period as Amherst (11-4-3, 6-4-3 NESCAC) fell on the road.

Women’s basketball

Amherst College 75, Bates 37 — Ali Doswell scored nine points to become the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,417 points.

No. 2 Amherst stayed perfect at 21-0 overall (7-0 in NESCAC action) setting up Saturday’s showdown with No. 1 Tufts Saturday in Medford.

Men’s basketball

Amherst College 74, Bates 65 — Johnny McCarthy scored his 1,000th-career point and Jayde Dawson scored 27 points as No. 11 Amherst bested the Bobcats at LeFrak Gymnasium.
