Friday’s colleges: Pioneer Valley helps Wesleyan finish second at Division III College Ultimate Championships

The Pioneer Valley made its presence felt at the Division III College Ultimate Championships.

Led by Northampton High graduates Sarah Dobrow and Sage Loomis, and Amherst Regional grads Lucy Salwen and Lily Gould, Wesleyan finished runner-up to Carlton.

The Eclipse beat Vicious Circles, 13-10, Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky.

Salwen had two goals, five assists and two defensed passes. Gould had two goals, one assist and one defensed pass. Loomis had two defensed passes.

Vicious Circles trailed 4-1, but rallied to pull within 6-5. The Eclipse took an 8-5 lead and maintained at least a two-goal advantage the rest of the way.

Vicious Circles opened the tournament with pool-play victories over Haverford (12-9), Georgia College (13-7) and Williams (9-8).

They beat Truman State (11-10) and Valparaiso (14-6) to reach the finals of the championship bracket.

For the tournament, Loomis finished with six goals and seven assists. Gould had four goals and seven assists. Salwen had three goals and 23 assists. Dobrow had one goal and one assist.

The men’s and women’s Division I College Championships are being held in Mason, Ohio, Friday through Monday.

In the women’s field, Dartmouth’s Princess Layout, which is led by senior Angela Zhu (Amherst), beat Delaware, 15-4, and Notre Dame, 15-6, in pool play on Friday. Zhu had two goals and nine assists combined in the two games.

On the men’s side, UMass opened with victories over Washington, 14-12, and Cal Poly, 15-12. Ben Sadok had seven goals and nine assists for Zoodisc.

Softball

Texas-Tyler 13, Amherst College 0 — The Mammoths got a good look at why the Patriots are the defending national Division III champs and one of the favorites to win the title again.

Texas-Tyler scored eight times in the first inning and Amherst (34-10) could never gain any traction.

The loss drops the Mammoths into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination event. They’ll face NESCAC rival Williams (37-12), Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Women’s track & field

Gabby Thomas (Florence) will be heading back to Tracktown USA.

The Harvard sophomore qualified for the outdoor track championships based off her quarterfinal finish in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA East Region Championships at Kentucky.

Thomas finished fourth in her heat, running 11.44 seconds into a head wind. The top three finishers in each quarterfinal plus the next best three times advance to Eugene, Oregon.

Thomas advanced to the quarterfinals in the 200, winning her heat with an event-best 22.60 seconds Thursday.

The quarterfinal round is Saturday. Thomas will also run in a 4x100 relay quarterfinal on Saturday.

Thomas was third in the 200 as a freshman at nationals.
