AMHERST — Police are trying to find a person who allegedly used a BB gun to shoot two people walking on College Street Saturday night.

Detective Lt. Ronald Young said Tuesday that the man and woman reported the incident Sunday morning, about 12 hours after both were struck by pellets from an air rifle at 10:30 p.m. Saturday The incident occurred near the intersection of College and Dickinson streets.

The woman suffered a welt to her lower back, for which she is seeking her own medical attention, while the man was uninjured after the pellet struck a water bottle in the backpack he was carrying, Young said.

Young said the victims believe shots were fired from a dark-colored SUV.

If a suspect can be identified, the person could face charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Young said there is no reason to believe the couple was targeted. “It looks like a random incident,” he said.
