Whenever I get an assignment to photograph at Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Easthampton, there’s a good chance I’ll be trekking down the Old Coach Road Trail with a bunch of kids. The trail cuts through a swell in the landscape to create a gently curving slope on both sides — not that different from a halfpipe sought by a snowboarder or skateboarder — and is affectionately known as “roller coaster hill.” On any given day the young hikers will stop at the top and, one at a time, with gravity on their side, race down the hill crisscrossing in a zig-zag pattern. The screaming, of course, comes naturally, just like on a real midway.
