SPRINGFIELD (AP) — The new spiritual leader of more than 200,000 Roman Catholics across western Massachusetts was formally installed Tuesday.

Mitchell Rozanski was installed as the bishop of Springfield on Tuesday during a special Mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield.

A public reception was also held at the Big E in West Springfield.

The 55-year-old Rozanski was an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Baltimore when he was named in June by Pope Francis to succeed the retiring Bishop Timothy McDonnell.

The Baltimore native is the diocese’s ninth bishop since its creation in 1870. The diocese has about 230,000 Catholics in 81 parishes in the state’s four westernmost counties.
