Amherst schools have been the site of multiple racist assaults throughout the 2013-2014 school year. Most of the vitriol has been aimed at Carolyn Gardner, a black math teacher who began teaching at Amherst Regional High School in September, 2013. She's been the target of graffiti and hateful notes.Other incidents include racially-based bullying that led to a social media post that scared the administration into closing the high school for a day and a "serious and aggressive" assault on a student.Throughout all this, the Amherst school administration has investigated incidents and tried to walk a balance between keeping the public informed and protecting privacy rights. Here's a timeline of events starting in October, 2013, through the present.
