DEERFIELD — A young man was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after an accident while jumping into the Deerfield River a little upstream from the Stillwater Bridge.

Deerfield Police Sgt. Harry Ruddock said the man, a 22-year-old Fitchburg resident, apparently slipped while attempting to jump off a cliff into the river and fell about 35 feet into the water, hit a rock on the way down and injured his head.

“There were other people there who helped him to shore,” Ruddock said.

Old Deerfield Assistant Fire Chief Daren Melnick said the man’s injuries were serious, and he was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield at 6:46 p.m.
