AMHERST — The threat of heavy rain as result of Hurricane Arthur prompted the Town of Amherst to move its July 4th celebration on the University of Massachusetts campus to Saturday.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the fields behind McGuirk Alumni Stadium, with fireworks scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m.
Amherst is one of several communities that have moved events to Saturday, when the weather is expected to be sunny and in the mid-80s. South Hadley announced Wednesday it would move its holiday fireworks celebration at the Michael E. Smith Middle School from Thursday to Saturday. The event begins at 6 p.m., with fireworks scheduled at 9:30 p.m.
And Springfield has canceled the entertainment before the fireworks during its Star Spangled Springfield event scheduled for Friday. Fireworks are still scheduled at 9:30 p.m., and food vendors in Riverfront Park will open at 7 p.m.
