Summer baseball: Easthampton holds off Northampton Mickey Mantle

The Easthampton Mickey Mantle team scored four runs in each of the first two innings and held on for a 10-8 victory at Northampton Wednesday evening.

Jamie Ryan (two hits, four RBIs, run) hit a three-run home run in the first for Easthampton (5-10).

Stevie Moussette and Hunter Brooks were each 2 for 2 with two runs scored, while Dakota Wheeler singled, doubled and knocked in a run.

Ian Ostberg had three hits with four RBIs and a run scored for Hamp (10-5). John Ferrara went 3 for 3 and two runs scored. Garrett Connly (two runs, RBI) and Pat Grygorcewicz (run) each added a pair of hits.

Brandon Bennett didn’t allow a hit in 11/3 innings to pick up a save, while Hamp’s Ostberg struck out five in two innings of hitless relief.

Amherst 11, Holyoke 0 — Stephen McCudden tossed a complete-game 4-hitter with seven strikeouts as Amherst (6-8) cruised at home.

McCudden helped himself with two hits and two runs scored. Liam Brodigan (two RBIs, two runs) and John Bella-Hunter (RBI, run) each had two hits.

Trevor Edwards added two RBIs while Seth Bella-Hunter scored twice.

Deerfield 11, Frontier 1 — Nate Patterson fired a 1-hitter and fanned nine as Deerfield (14-1) won at home.

Seth Gewanter had two hits, including a triple, scored three runs and drove in two. Ben Bruscoe also had a pair of hits with an RBI.

Kade Gewanter had a two-run double, Brian Shaw a single and two RBIs, while Trevor Mankowsky added an RBI triple.

Christian Smiarowski singled and scored the only run for Frontier (3-9).

Little League

Auburn 2, Northampton 1 — Ethan Salem singled home Cam Kelly in the first inning, but Northampton (0-1) failed to score again in the opening game of the double-elimination Section 1 Juniors Tournament at Arcanum Field.

Salem, Kelly and Christian Hodgson had the only three hits for Hamp.

The combination of Kieran Thurston, Salem and John Carey allowed just five hits. Salem and Carey pitched scoreless relief over the last three frames.

Northampton will need to beat either Brookfield or Seekonk at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Arcanum to stay in the tournament.

Tri-County League

DiFranco 6, Easthampton Savings Bank 4 — Joe Jachym had an RBI single in a three-run sixth inning, but the rally ended short for Easthampton (7-6-1).

Chris Starcun had two hits while Jeremy Tanguay and Dan Whigham added singles in the loss.

Teddy Bear Pools 7, St. Joseph’s 1 — Andrew Sadowsky allowed just four hits with six strikeouts to earn the complete-game win for Teddy Bear (9-7) on the road.

Tom Malooly doubled, triple and drove in three runs. Kyle Platner had three hits with an RBI and a run, while Justin Carey added two hits and a run.
