Local baseball: Gateway unloads in the first, wins Senior Little League District 2 title

Last modified: Monday, July 07, 2014
Jonny Haskell didn’t need a lot of run support in the Senior Little League District 2 championship game, but his Gateway teammates gave it too him anyway.

Haskell had a five-run lead before throwing a pitch and led Gateway to an 11-0 mercy-rule shortened win in five innings in Huntington. It marked the first time any Gateway team has ever advanced to a Little League state tournament at any level. They’ll play the District 5 champions (a to-be-determined central Mass. team), Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Gateway High School.

Haskell struck out 10 and worked around two walks and two hits to earn the win for Gateway, while Joey Jones (run, RBI), Trevor Bruno (two runs), Matt Hughes (two runs) and Cullen Pike (two RBIs) each had two hits for Gateway.

Little League (11-12)

Northampton Blue 1, Northampton Gold 0 — Orion McLain put Northampton Blue ahead early with an RBI single in the first inning, which would hold for the only run as the game was halted by storms. Jacob Matakanski earned the win.

Longmeadow 5, Belchertown 4 — Belchertown (3-2) fell just short in the semifinals.

Andrew Fijal went 2 for 2 with a triple and a run scored. Tyler Laramee hit into an RBI ground out in the first and singled in the third. Errors brought home runs in the second and Tim Mitus was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Belchertown’s he final run.
