This picture, taken in the Central Chambers building in Northampton, started out as a study in geometry. There was a simple pattern to the stairwell that I wanted to make work in a photograph, even if the image just got filed and nothing ever came of it. But when the handrail got put to use, it gave the frame the little bit of action and focus it needed to keep it out of the dustbin. The title, suggested by my muse (a real person, mind you — not just in my head) immediately made me think of a garden labyrinth used for just that.
