The Southampton Little League Junior team opened district play with three pitchers combining to no-hit and run-rule Westfield, 18-3, at home on Thursday night.
Matt York opened the effort, allowing one unearned run on no hits and striking out four in 12/3 innings. Jack O’Connell went to and 21/3 innings, strike out two and allowing two unearned runs. Matt Hurd closed out the game, pitching a 1-2-3 fifth inning by inducing three ground outs.
Leading 7-3 in the fourth, Southampton (1-0) tacked on 11 runs as it sent 16 batters to the plate. Hunter Brooks got things going with a double and added an RBI single in his second at bat of the attack. Gage Fortin put the mercy rule in force for the following inning with a three-run double and York knocked in Southampton’s final two runs with a single.
Brooks finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored in the rout.
Agawam 9, Northampton 5 — With the game tied in the top of the seventh, Northampton (0-1) gave up four runs in the home loss to open the double elimination tournament.
Kiran Thurston and RJ Safron each pitched two strong innings for Northampton, while Chris Darragh had two hits and an RBI on a squeeze play.
District 2 (9-10)
Belchertown 11, Northampton 5 — Gina Camerota allowed just one earned run and struck out five over 42/3 innings in the home win for Belchertown (2-0).
Jordan Talbot had two hits, scored a run and drove in another. Michael Gilbert scored three times with an RBI, while Shay O’Neill reached base three times and scored once.
For the second straight game, Belchertown executed a relay to cut down a runner at the plate. Thursday it was left fielder Tim Mitus to third baseman Talbot to catcher Ryan Zawistowski in the third inning.
Luke Gaida had a hit and scored two runs for Northampton (0-2).
Northampton King & Cushman 7, Springfield 3 — Back-to-back three-run innings lifted King & Cushman (3-8) to the road win.
Keith Natale had two hits, including a two-run double in the third inning, scored two runs and stole two bases. Ben O’Connor and Andrew Serrio each added two hits and two runs scored. Christian Smiarowski had a hit, and RBI, a run scored and a stole base in the win.
Deerfield 7, Greenfield 3 — Quinn Doyle threw a complete-game 4-hitter and drove in three runs on two hits for Deerfield (10-1) in the road win.
Noah Barnes added a hit with an RBI and a run for Deerfield.
Mohawk 3, South Hadley 1 — David Pratt brought home Alex Dragon for South Hadley’s the lone run in the home loss.
Ryan Mooney and Colin Paleologopoulos each had a hit, while Matt Werenski threw three innings of hitless relief with four strikeouts for South Hadley (7-4).
Amherst 12, Frontier 11 — Dani Miller-Grossman drove in Jack Hession for the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh as Amherst (4-5) earned the road win.
Hession and Liam Brodigan each hit two-run doubles, while Stephen McCudden scored three times.
Riley Baker knocked in three runs for Frontier (3-5). Evan Bourque and John Jacques each had two hits and two RBIs. Bailey Powers reached base fine times and stole two bases.
Peoples Bank 7, Easthampton Savings Bank 5 — Jeremy Tanguay and Chris Starcun (run) each had a pair of hits in the home loss for ESB (5-5-1).
Joe Popielarczyk earned the complete-game victory with nine strikeouts for Peoples (12-1).
Teddy Bear Pools 9, Manny’s 4 — Zach Bartak’s two hits and four RBIs helped Teddy Bear (5-6) hand Manny’s (9-1-1) its first loss of the season.
Kyle Platner added a pair of RBIs on a hit, while Sam Tillona allowed only one run with two strikeouts over five innings pitched.
