NORTHAMPTON — A disturbance at Meadowbrook Apartments Monday night led to the arrest of a Florence man on charges including assault and threatening the lives of a police officer’s family.

Rene Santiago, 50, of 491 Bridge Road, Apt. #2034, Florence, pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court Tuesday to charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, threatening to commit a crime and assault.

He was released on his own recognizance by Judge W. Michael Goggins, according to the clerk magistrate’s office.

According to police and court records, officers were dispatched to Meadowbrook about 8:15 p.m. for a report of an assault.

Police said Santiago appeared intoxicated and witnesses said he was challenging people in the apartment complex playground to fight with him.

When police attempted to speak to Santiago, they said he began yelling profanities and threats against the officers with his fists clenched. According to court records, Santiago told one officer that he would “need to keep an eye on your family because you’re going to find them dead.”

Santiago remained uncooperative with police while they tried to take him into custody and during the booking process, according to court records.

Santiago is due back in court June 10 for a pretrial hearing.
