Tuesday’s high school recaps: Nate Patterson, Khalil Taylor, Ben Ruddock combine for 1-hitter for Frontier

The Frontier Regional baseball team knew Ben Ruddock would be its ace pitcher coming into the season, but how the rest of the rotation would shake out was a bit unclear.

Sophomore Nate Patterson made his case for that No. 2 spot Tuesday afternoon in a 1-0 home victory over Pioneer Regional.

Patterson struck out nine batters over five shutout innings. The right-hander only allowed one hit and walked one.

“Nate’s pretty calm and collected,” Frontier coach Chuck Holt said. “With his straight face, I couldn’t tell whether he was nervous or not. He threw strikes, kept the ball down and made great pitches on the corners.”

The only hit allowed by Frontier (1-1) pitchers came in the third on a high chopper over the mound. Second baseman Niko Ames made a strong effort to charge the ball, but the runner just beat the throw.

On that play, the Pioneer runner at second base rounded third and tried to score but was gunned down by first baseman Brandon Bryant.

Khalil Taylor came on in the sixth and fanned two in his first career outing. Ruddock earned the save by striking out the side in the seventh.

The Red Hawks scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the first. Sean Doyle led off with a single. He stole second, was advanced to third on a Seth Gwantner groundout, then came home on a passed ball.

Doyle had two hits, while Dylan Husted accounted for the other.
