Frontier Regional senior Sean Doyle was one of the most consistent downhill skiers over the past three years.
Three years ago, Doyle placed second at the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference individual championship and was the named the Daily Hampshire Gazette Player of the Year. Last year, he won the title and the award.
Doyle’s final run down Berkshire East wasn’t as clean, but he placed third this season. And for a third straight season, Doyle was named Gazette Player of the Year.
“I didn’t ski as well this year,” Doyle said. “I am still pretty happy to have won it again though. The excitement doesn’t really go away.”
Doyle opened the season with a second-place finish on the slalom course at Berkshire East in Charlemont. He was fifth on slalom after the second race, but recovered in the third meet with a second-place run on giant slalom.
Doyle was then third on slalom in the fourth race
In the fifth race, Doyle fell and finished seventh on giant slalom. He came back with a fifth-place showing on giant slalom in race No. 6, before finishing the regular season with his best run — a first-place finish on slalom.
“I just knew that it was my last race,” he said. “I knew I wasn’t going to win it all, so I just wanted to do well and I finished first. Nothing really went through my mind.”
Doyle, who placed 16th at individuals as a freshman, was pleased with his career.
“I wish I won it all this year because it is my last year,” Doyle said. “But I am mostly satisfied with what I’ve done.”
