Though I’ve seen this kind of “fern frost” gracing car windows before, I was surprised to see it covering the entire painted surface of my car one morning. I took a crystallography course in college but never totally understood the why part of how and where crystals grow. As in, “Why this pattern, here?” Perhaps the residue left from the last wax job is responsible. In any case, I guess it’s the preordained figures that get set loose in a random way that make the phenomenon so interesting.
