NORTHAMPTON — After more than five years as executive secretary to the City Council and License Commission, Mary L. Midura will soon start a new position as secretary of the Police Department.
“We’re happy to have her,” said Police Chief Russell P. Sienkiewicz. “She’ll be of tremendous value to the department.”
Sienkiewicz said Midura will start training for her new position on a part-time basis beginning Monday, the same day that Lt. Dorothy Clayton officially begins work as the department’s first female captain. Midura will continue to fulfill responsibilities to the License Commission and the City Council while the city looks for her replacement, the chief said.
The changes fill two positions in the Police Department left vacant when former captain Scott A. Savino and administrative assistant Maryann Keating resigned in December following a time-card-fixing investigation.
More than 50 people applied for the secretary position, and Midura was selected by a hiring panel appointed by Sienkiewicz. The position has been restructured to add some additional responsibilities, he said.
Midura currently splits a 35-hour work week between the council and License Commission and often staffs night meetings throughout the week. The police position is 40 hours a week and does not include night meetings. Sienkiewicz said a salary has yet to be worked out, but the position will pay between $15.51 and $19.94 an hour.
Midura was appointed as executive secretary of the council and License Commission in August 2008.
