Greenfield driver in fatal I-91 crash Saturday morning ID'd

WHATELY — A 56-year-old Greenfield man died in a single-car motor vehicle accident Saturday morning on I-91 south in Whately.

Massachusetts State Police said Robert E. Sweeney was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Tracker near Exit 24 shortly after 8 a.m. when it rolled over, trapping him inside. Sweeney, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The accident closed down both southbound lanes from around 8:30 a.m. to noon, police said. The cause of the accident had not been determined as of Sunday evening.

The Northwestern district attorney’s office is investigating the crash. State Police detectives assigned to the DA’s office, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, Whately Fire/EMS Department, Northampton EMS Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation assisted on scene.
