Kathleen Mellen’s Best Bets: ‘American Hustle’; ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’

The more frightful the weather gets, the more apt I am to hunker down in a local cinema seat to see a good movie. First on my list is “American Hustle” at Cinemark in Hadley. Reuniting Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence from his excellent 2012 film, “Silver Linings Playbook,” director David O. Russell has a bit of fun with the 1970s Abscam bribery scandal. The film is all nylon shirts, big hair, down-to-the-navel necklines and ’70s music from the likes of Donna Summer and the Bee Gees. Should warm me right up.

Nobody makes movies like the Coen Brothers, and now you can add “Inside Llewyn Davis” to the list of their instant classics, like “The Big Lebowski,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Burn After Reading” and “O, Brother Where Art Thou?” Now playing at Amherst Cinema.
