BELCHERTOWN — Nearly 5,000 National Grid customers in Hampshire County, mostly in Belchertown, are currently without power.
Deborah Drew, a spokeswoman for the utility, said the hope is to have power back for all customers by 10 p.m.
“We understand it’s a cold evening. We’re working as fast as we can,” Drew said.
Drew said the problems started around 5:15 p.m., when about 2,500 customers in Belchertown and Granby lost power due to an equipment failure.
In an attempt to make an immediate fix, National Grid switched about half these customers onto a backup “feeder” line. By 6:40 p.m., only about 1,250 customers remained without power. But then the backup line failed, she said, and more customers lost power.
“The additional 4,000 or so is really part of the overall problem, part of putting more load onto a feeder,” Drew said.
Drew said National Grid teams are at both the site of the original equipment failure in Granby and at a nearby substation making repairs.
