Northampton briefs: Free first night parking; Polish singalong; food for fines

Last modified: Monday, December 30, 2013

FREE PARKING: In honor of First Night celebrations, the city is waiving parking fees from 10 a.m. to midnight Tuesday. Parking will be free during that period for all on-street metered spots as well as metered and computerized off-street parking spaces in Northampton. Exceptions are the city’s E.J. Gare parking garage behind Thornes Marketplace, which will collect parking fees as usual, and the Union Street lot, which will collect fees as usual beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

POLISH SINGALONG: The city’s Polish Heritage Committee is hosting a Polish Christmas Carol singalong at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at St. Valentine’s Polish National Catholic Church on King Street. Carols will be led by singers from area church choirs and refreshments will be served following the event in the parish hall.

For details, call Christine Newman, recording secretary for the Heritage Committee, 584-4531.

FOOD FOR FINES: Forbes Library is offering book borrowers a chance to clear library fines while also supporting the Northampton Survival Center. From Jan. 2 through 15, library patrons may pay overdue book fines with donations of canned goods and healthy nonperishable food items. All food collected will be given to the Northampton Survival Center for distribution to families in need. Items in high demand include nondairy milk, cereal, crackers, canned fruit, peanut butter, tuna fish, soup, pasta, beans and rice. The suggested donation is one food item for each $2 in library fines. The offer applies to late fines only and does not include fines for lost or damaged library items.
