Weekend Planner — Talk: ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas

Last modified: Friday, February 07, 2014
While “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a well-known carol whose familiar verses and repetitions seem to conjure a jolly English holiday party, some scholars believe the lyrics hold a deeper symbolic meaning and tell a coded story. One of those is professor emeritus of psychology at Springfield College Thomas Bernard, whose extensive research into the evolution of the song from its earliest manuscript version have culminated in a book, “The Twelve Days of Christmas: The Mystery and the Meaning.” On Saturday Bernard will be at the Jones Library in Amherst to divulge the hidden meanings behind of the words.

2:30 p.m. in the library’s Woodbury Room.
