Jack Yanko started the cross country season far from Amherst, but the Hurricanes junior felt right at home on the course.

He finished second in the junior-senior seeded race at Saturday’s Southern Maine XC classic in 15 minutes, 37.99 seconds. Luke Laverdiere of Yarmouth (Maine) won at 15:17.85, which broke the course record.

They set the pace in the first mile at 4:49 and had a 10 second gap on the field.

Amherst finished fourth out of 23 teams with 155 points. The Hurricanes were one point out of third and three points from second. Greely (Maine) won with 69.

Amherst’s Aidan Shea was 18th in 17:03.98, Aiden Focault-Ehteridge finished 26th in 17:23.57 and Sean Towse was 41st in 17:49.99.

Owen Price finished 78th (18:35.77), Avi Randall was 101st (18:56.91) and Peter Treyz took 108th (18:59.77).

Boys soccer

Frontier 1, Mount Greylock 1 — Connor Bagdon scored in the second half Saturday to keep the Red Hawks unbeaten.

Ethan LaFleur assisted, and Peter Bronke made two saves for Frontier (0-0-2).

New Bedford 4, Amherst 1 — Vic Wellman scored a free kick in the second half Saturday.

The Hurricanes (0-2) trailed 2-0 at halftime.

Matt Essig and Lucas Morales-Fernandez combined for 10 saves.

Lenox 6, Granby 0 — Ryan Walz made seven saves Saturday in the first loss of the season for the Rams (2-1).
