A truck bed filled with shingles and furring strips in the driveway of Ron and Alice Thibault's Easthampton home on Monday was testament to a volunteer job by Easthampton police officers to get the house ready for some new siding. The officers' effort was one way of thanking her for her many kindnesses over the last ten years, including bringing them water and baked goods on their daily shifts.

Both spoke during the vigil. Sabin-Rescia lost her son, Matthew Michael Giovanni Rescia, in Nov. 2000; Leggett lost her son, Ash Garrettson, in Dec. 2014. The event was coordinated by Liz Whynott, who is the needle exchange director for Tapestry Health, and Brendan Plante, who is an outreach clinician for Eliot Community Human Services.    Sabin-Rescia is the founder of Never Another Death. The vigil was held in conjunction with International Overdose Awareness Day, a global initiative held on Aug. 31 each year.
