Amherst Regional boys basketball clinches tourney berth
Noris Cuevas-Nova led the Amherst Regional boys basketball team on a big fourth-quarter comeback as the Hurricanes clinched a postseason berth with a 59-57 win over Brattleboro (Vt.) Union at home Saturday.
Cuevas-Nova scored 11 of his game-high 23 points as Amherst (10-9) enjoyed a 20-6 advantage in the final frame.
The junior also had 13 rebounds, five blocks and three assists in the victory.
Fahmi Farah had 10 points for Amherst.
Hockey
South Hadley 6, Amherst 2 - Chris Menard had four goals and one assist as the Tigers (17-0-1) cruised Saturday in Holyoke.
Doug Sattler added one goal and two assists and now has 96 career points for South Hadley, which hosts St. Mary on Monday at 1 p.m.
Spencer Nawrocki also scored once. Joey Harris and Tom Down had two assists each and Jake Knowles, Ben Kravetz, Tom Crotty and Jeff Beauregard each had one.
Devin Hoagland made 27 saves in the win.
Corey Deres scored twice for the Hurricanes (4-12-2) in the loss. Jason Sloat and Chris Anderson each had an assist, while Eddie Sablak finished with 46 saves.
Belchertown 5, Greenfield 2 - Keean Bell scored twice as the Orioles (9-9) took a big step toward qualifying for the postseason with the win at home.
Austin Duhaime (assist), Hogan Merrill and Sean Kennedy added one goal each. Alex Bachand had two assists, while Tommy Daley and Jordan Auffrey were credited with one each.
Travis Greeley made 24 saves in the win for Belchertown, which needs two points in its final two games. The Orioles wrap finish their regular season at Wahconah in Pittsfield on Monday and at Amherst on Wednesday.
Jake Ewell had a goal and an assist for the Green Wave (13-4-2) in the loss.
Turners Falls 7, Central 1 - The Indians (11-9, 5-5 Wright) wrapped up their regular season with their ninth straight victory Saturday in Greenfield.
Keegan Downie had five points (one goal, four assists), while Travis Holloway (one assist) and Brandon Lenois each scored twice.
Cody Booska (three assists) and Trevor Peduzzi (one assist) each scored once.
Jack Powers made 24 saves for Turners.
Cathedral 5, St. John's Prep 5 - The Panthers (9-5-6) couldn't hold on to a 5-1 third-period win on the road Saturday.
Brendan Ashe scored twice for Cathedral, while Peter Crinella (three assists), Frank Crinella (one assist) and Artie Potter each had one goal.
Matt Foley was credited with two saves, and D.J. Petruzzelli, Thomas Quinlan of Hadley and Cullen Geary of South Hadley each had one.

Williston 1, Loomis Chaffee 0 - Alex Starzyk's second-period goal was enough for the Wildcats in Windsor, Conn., Saturday.
Laura Aptowitz assisted on the goal, while Sydney Belinskas was credited with the shutout in net.
Girls basketball
Williston 44, Cheshire 22 - Natalia Ovando scored a game-high 17 points as the Wildcats (8-11) cruised at home Saturday.
Gia Parker of Amherst added 10 points in the win.
Boys hockey
Williston 3, Deerfield 1 - Matt Dupont, Seth Cupak and Ross Olsson each scored a goal as the Wildcats won Friday in Deerfield.
Tim Keegan made 32 saves for the shutout.
Boys squash
Loomis Chaffee 6, Williston 1 - Edwin Kim earned the lone victory in four sets for the Wildcats (5-8) in Windsor, Conn., Saturday.
