Laurie DeVault, a former Orchard Valley neighbor, didn't send a postcard but an email that was filled with good news about a trip to Peru. She went to Peru with her son, David Goldberg, and David's father, Eddy Goldberg. She wrote that they attended the wedding of their niece, Lauren Nussbaum, to Javier Arana Lopez in Lima. Other Amherst natives there were the bride's sister, Dara Nussbaum-Vasquez, as well as Sarah Feldman, Jeffrey Rothenberg and Eva Rosen. The bride's mother, Beth Goldberg Shaine, and her husband, Bill Shaine, of Shutesbury, were also in attendance. After the wedding, many in the party went on to tour the Sacred Valley, including visiting the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu.

The bride and groom reside in Washington, D.C., where Lauren is studying law at American University.

The younger crowd all graduated from ARHS. Feldman and Rothenberg recently announced their engagement.

When I was covering the schools for the former Amherst Record and then the Bulletin and Gazette, I spent three Tuesdays a month, some Thursdays and Saturdays (during the budget season) with Don Frizzle, who was the superintendent of schools.

In all those meetings he was always professional, organized, respectful, rarely flustered. It was a serious job but he had a sense of humor. He and Assistant Superintendent Ron Bell made a great team. He was an advocate for the students. He always answered my calls, which made my job easier. I did his exit interview.

After he retired we would run into each other. He would tell me about his volunteer activities. He loved being the first male head of the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Auxiliary. He loved history and served as a guide at Historic Deerfield and in Springfield.

Don died two weeks ago. Condolences to his family and friends.
