Marjorie Mathews
AMHERST - Marjorie (Horton) Mathews died peacefully Feb. 9, 2012, at the Hospice of the Fisher Home. Marjorie was born in Quincy in 1928, graduated for North Quincy High School with the class of 1945 and graduated from the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, where she majored in commercial art.
She and her husband, John Mathews, moved in 1953 to Amherst, where they bought a store on the village green, which became Mathews Shoes. She was predeceased by John in 2000.
She was the mother of three children, Kathleen, Michael and Edward, all of whom were raised in Amherst, and had three grandchildren. She and her husband became property owners on Longboat Key, Fla., in 1968, and for many years divided their time between their homes in Wilmington, Vt., and Longboat Key. In 2004 she moved back to Amherst to be closer to her children.
The funeral and burial are private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst, is in charge of arrangements.
