Frontier roundup: Turners Falls hockey nears tournament berth
The Turners Falls hockey team is on the doorstep of the postseason.
Trevor Peduzzi's two goals helped keep the Indians (9-9, 3-5 Wright) rolling with a 5-4 victory over Chicopee Saturday in Holyoke.
Brandon Lenois, Travis Holloway, and Cody Booska had the other goals for Turners, which has won seven in a row and features Frontier Regional athletes.
Turners needs one more win to qualify for the tournament.
The Indians beat Belchertown 4-1 at Olympia Rink in West Springfield on Feb. 10 for their sixth straight win.
Peduzzi and Keegan Downey each scored two goals for Turners Falls. Booska had three assists. Goaltender Will Miller had 22 saves for the Indians.
Girls basketball
Sydney Judge had six points as the Red Hawks (9-8, 9-7 Franklin South) fell 50-25 to Athol on the road Feb. 10.
Alexa Whitney poured in 25 points for the Red Raiders (12-6, 12-4 North).
Boys basketball
In a matchup of Division 3 title hopefuls, New Leadership (9-7) held off the Red Hawks (15-3) 67-52 in Springfield on Feb. 10.
Frontier trailed 48-46 with 5:30 left in the fourth, but transition baskets and open shots aided NLCS down the stretch.
Justin Mieczkowski had 13 points and six rebounds, while Danny Kieras also had 13 points.
Paul Decker added 12 points, while Nate Perret had six points and five rebounds for the Hawks, who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.
The Red Hawks outscored Athol in the third quarter 29-10 to pull away for a 74-49 win at home on Feb. 9.
Ryan Hoar had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Nate Perret (12), Justin Mieczkowski (11) and Paul Decker (11) each scored in double figures.
