Amherst Regional roundup: Girls basketball wins seventh straight
Forbasaw Nkamebo and Brianna Leonard each had double-doubles Tuesday as the Amherst Regional girls basketball team won its seventh straight game with a 53-39 victory over Westfield.
Nkamebo (12 rebounds) and Leonard (10 boards, six steals, five assists) both scored a game-high 13 points for the Hurricanes (15-2, 7-0 Suburban).
Kristen Ferola added eight points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals.
Ferola, meanwhile, bounced back from an ankle injury and had 15 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists as Amherst beat host Agawam 59-41 on Feb. 10.
Ferola missed one game after injuring her ankle against Chicopee on Feb. 3.
Leonard added 14 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Victoria Stewart chipped in with 10 points and five assists.
The Hurricanes outscored the Brownies 32-17 over the middle two quarters.
Boys basketball
Tchujio Nkamebo scored a career-high 19 points as the Hurricanes (9-8, 5-2 Suburban League) beat Longmeadow 82-79 on the road Monday and moved within a win of qualifying for the postseason.
Nkambeo also added 10 rebounds, while teammates Josh Whitaker and Noris Cuevas-Nova each chipped in 18 points for Amherst.
East Longmeadow knocked down 10 of its 15 3-pointers in the first half as it jumped out to a 55-20 halftime lead and won 90-71 in Amherst on Feb. 9.
Noris Cuevas-Nova led the Hurricanes (8-8, 4-2) with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Tchuijo Nkamebo added 15 points, while Josh Whitaker had 12 in the loss.
Hockey
Corey Deres had both goals for the Hurricanes, who fell 8-2 to Greenfield on Feb. 9 at Orr Rink. Chris Anderson assisted twice, and Luke Allen added one assist.
Noah Foster-Marquis made 19 saves for Greenfield, while Eddie Sablak (18 saves) and Ben Thompson (15) split time in goal for Amherst.
Wrestling
Nate Kane finished with 1-2 record in the individual wrestling state Division 1 tournament in Weymouth last weekend.
Kane won his first match at 138 pounds, beating Brian Vizarreta of BC High 11-9, but fell in his next two matches of the double-elimination event.
