Amherst Regional roundup: Brianna Leonard paces girls basketball
Brianna Leonard scored a game-high 19 points and made 10 steals to lead the Amherst Regional girls basketball team to a 57-42 victory over Chicopee Comp Tuesday at home.
Forbasaw Nkamebo (12 rebounds, five steals) and Victoria Stewart (seven assists) each had 14 points for Amherst (13-2, 5-0 Suburban).
Leonard (24 points) led the way for the Hurricanes in a 65-40 blowout win at Chicopee on Feb. 3.
Stewart had 14 points, while Kristen Ferola added 11 for Amherst.
Boys basketball
The Hurricanes (8-7, 4-1 Suburban) took control of first place in the league with the road victory over the Bombers (6-7, 2-2) Monday.
Tchuijo Nkamebo had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Noris Cuevas-Nova added 11 points and seven boards for Amherst, which led 18-4 after the first quarter and 37-20 after three.
Justin Crosby (17 points) did not place the first half for Westfield
James Sowers led the Hurricanes with 13 points in a 58-37 loss to Commerce on Feb. 3.
Nkamebo had a double-double for Amherst with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Indoor track
League championships were on the line Feb. 3 during the final PVIAC indoor track meet of the regular season at Smith College.
The Amherst boys beat Longmeadow 57-38 and Minnechaug 70-25 to finish undefeated at 9-0 and win the Pioneer League.
Jesse Coull won the 2-mile in 10 minutes, 13 seconds, while Michael Stender won the 600 in 1:27.8 to pace the effort.
The Amherst girls fell to Longmeadow 67-28 and lost to Minnechaug 57-34, but Mel Devoney won the mile (5:38.1) and Emma Biggs took first in the 300 (44.16).
The PVIAC championship meet is Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Smith College.
Wrestling
Amherst's Nate Kane earned second place in the 138-pound weight class at the Western Massachusetts Division 1 individual wrestling tournament Saturday in Westfield.
Kane lost to Central's Jonathan Viruet 12-0 in the title bout.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state Division 1 individual tournament Saturday in Weymouth.
